Middle School Program
WLGSL is participating in the Middle School Softball Program in Loudoun County!
In spring 2019, three softball leagues in Loudoun County launched the inaugural season of the Middle School Softball Program. The three leagues (Ashburn Girls Softball League, Leesburg Girls Softball League and Lower Loudoun Girls Softball League) fielded 10 teams from 13 different schools. In instances where there were not enough players from a single school, the players from two schools were combined. For the spring 2025 season WLGSL will again be participating and plans to field teams from both Harmony and Blue Ridge Middle Schools.
The Middle School Softball Program is not operated or endorsed by Loudoun County Public Schools.
This program is an independent program run in partnership between youth softball leagues in Loudoun County. The teams will share the name and colors of the associated Middle Schools, but LCPS does not have a role in the program. Players wishing to participate in the program will tryout for the team associated with their Middle School. If a player attends private school, is home schooled, or otherwise does not attend an LCPS Middle School, that player will tryout for the school they would normally attend based on school district boundaries.
What is the benefit of the Middle School Softball Program?
The middle school program provides young ladies at participating middle schools the opportunity to represent their school, enhance school spirit, develop camaraderie, encourage teamwork, and to further develop their softball skills while developing relationships with the girls they will play with in high school. The program will also provide an opportunity to encourage participation from the high school programs as the middle school players practice and play together before they try out for their respective high school teams.
How does the Middle School Softball Program differ from House League and Travel Team Softball?
The middle school softball program provides interested players an opportunity to play a more competitive level of softball than house league, but not with the full commitment of a travel softball program. It also provides the opportunity to represent their school, enhance school spirit, develop camaraderie, encourage teamwork, and to further develop their softball skills while developing relationships with the girls they will play with in high school. Teams will be encouraged to make sure players get playing time, however there are no guaranteed playing time minimums. Rosters will be staffed to accommodate different skills levels and potential schedule conflicts.
How will the Middle School Softball Program work?
Projected Start Date – Tryouts in early Feb 2025
- Season runs late March through late May with playoffs late May/early June
- About a 10-15 game season with single elimination playoffs or possible tournament style playoff (pool play and championships)
- 2 games per week
All middle school female athletes (grades 6th – 8th) are eligible to tryout
- One team will be formed for each participating middle school from players that attend that school, are homeschooled or attend a private school, but live in the attendance boundary for their public school
- Schools may be combined if numbers do not support adequate team size
Games will be officiated using USA Softball rules with local program modifications
What is the anticipated cost to play in the Middle School Softball Program?
$175-$225 (non-refundable) which is payable if your player is offered and accepts a position on the team
Can a player simultaneously play in both Middle School Softball and other Softball programs?
YES - If a player makes the middle school team and is not on a travel team, they will be required to play on a WLGSL house league team. Schedules are developed to minimize conflicts with practices and house league games. There may be times where Middle School Softball conflicts with other commitments. The leagues will work to minimize the impact of potential scheduling conflicts as much as possible. It is very important that each player discusses their situation and potential conflicts with their coaches to set expectations.
Should I register my player in both house league (if not a travel player) and Middle School Softball?
Yes. Your player must be registered in WLGSL house league and pay the house league fee if the player is not on a travel team. Middle School fees will be paid only after your player makes the team.
How will player selection be determined?
Player selection and team size will be determined by the individual coaches.
What happens if my player is not selected for the Middle School team?
See answer above in "Should I register in both house and middle school".
